It’s cold outside. Maybe its snowy or wet where you are or maybe it’s so dry that your hands are chapped. Whatever the weather, winter comes with short days, pressure-filled holidays, and all kinds of expectations and responsibilities. Here are a few things you shouldn’t be without this winter.
- Light. You need natural light this time of year. I love waking up with my natural light alarm clock.
You can spend hundreds of dollars on these clocks, but this one is less than $40 and you can wake to a gradual sunrise and even add sounds of nature if that’s your thing. https://amzn.to/4pcvx11
If you’re looking for something you can put in your office or next to your favorite chair, this “Happy Sun Lamp” is inexpensive and just might help you beat the winter blues. https://amzn.to/3Md0iV6 - Movement. You need to keep moving and stretching. Sometimes the cold, crisp air and winter sun hits me just right and I’m motivated to take a brisk walk. Other times, I just want my blanket and coffee. Either way, my muscles just don’t seem as engaged in the winter so I need to be intentional and take 10 minutes twice a day to stretch. You don’t need any special tools or tricks, just stretch. I do use a mat because its more comfortable and I don’t end up with my face in the floor.
You don’t need to spend a fortune. Here’s a roll-up mat for less than $20 https://amzn.to/3Mg8fJ4 - Vitamin D. I’m not a doctor and this is not medical advice. I always supplement with vitamin d, especially in the winter when I’m not outside as much. I personally use these. I don’t know know if they are the best. My vitamin d levels have increased since I started using them, so that’s good. They are tiny and dissolve in your mouth in about 30 seconds! https://amzn.to/4pLqoNd
Here is a five-minute video about supplementing with Vitamin D https://youtu.be/gjJdzHIwDDU?si=87uZu6hYq5HDaFzJ - Comfort. Winter is also the best time, IMO, to just be cozy and comfortable. For me, that means flannel and fleece, blankets, warm hats, and gloves. A couple of years ago, we discovered the weighted blanket…they are amazing. I bought ours from a specialty site a few years ago when they weren’t as widely available, but here are a couple of highly rated options from Amazon. Give one a try!
Throw/Lap blanket. Multiple colors available. Around $30 https://amzn.to/3Xx9vtS
A little heavier, a little bigger, a little softer. Multiple colors. Sherpa Fleece. Around $50 https://amzn.to/48OSMs8
Grab your favorite fleece overshirt, sweatshirt, fuzzy hat and a thermal mug of your favorite hot beverage and sit for a few minutes in that winter sun (or under cover and watch the snow/rain/sleet, if that’s your weather today!)
