Make Your Own Spice Blends & Coffee Creamer: Non-Toxic, Tastes Better, Cheaper

Make Your Own Spice Blends & Coffee Creamer: Non-Toxic, Tastes Better, Cheaper

I like to know what goes into my food and what I’m feeding my family. It’s about making wise choices that promote lasting well-being. Store-bought spice blends and seasoning packets are full of ingredients that I don’t want! One evening, while preparing a chicken dish, I realized I had no ranch dressing on hand. I decided to make my own and it was fantastic. And, it was easy! That’s how it started…homemade spice blends, then flavored sugars…most recently, I started making homemade coffee creamers!

It is fun. It is simple. It is satisfying.

And, the bonus is now I know exactly what is in my pantry; I can customize blends to suit our tastes, mix them creatively, or share them as gifts. There are no fillers, preservatives or stuff I can’t identify.

Maltodextrin. Modified corn starch. Silicon dioxide. “Natural flavors.” No thank you.

Did you know?

Maltodextrin is a filler to bulk up the product. Modified corn starch is a thickener. Silicon dioxide is an anti-caking agent (it is the same stuff that’s in those little “do not eat” packets). And “natural flavors”? That can mean almost anything—it’s a catchall term that food manufacturers use to avoid listing actual ingredients.

So now I make my own.

Taco seasoning, ranch seasoning, Italian seasoning…the homemade version tastes better; it just takes a few minutes; and it’s, less expensive than buying from the store.

And just like that, I was done buying pre-made spice packets and blends. Everywhere I looked, I found something else I could make from scratch with simple ingredients.

First: The Herbs & Spices

Italian seasoning? Oregano, basil, onion, garlic, rosemary…add what you like, as much as you like, and leave out the stuff you don’t want.

Ranch dressing mix? Dill, onion, garlic, chives…easy and there is no maltodextrin, MSG, or modified food starch.

Pumpkin pie spice? Personalize it! Do you like more ginger or cloves, lots of cinnamon, a little nutmeg…go for it, however you want it! And, leave out the anti-caking agents and natural flavor.

I started making everything myself. Italian seasoning. Ranch mix. Pumpkin spice. Everything bagel seasoning. I save a ton of money; I know what I’m feeding my family; and, it is simple and fun!

Every single one tasted better than the store-bought version. Every single one cost a fraction of the price. And every single one contained exactly what I put in it—nothing more, nothing less.

Next: I Tackled Coffee Creamer & Sugars

If you buy coffee creamer, I dare you to read the list of ingredients. Some of the brands don’t even contain dairy! Water or oil is the first ingredient! Don’t worry, we can fix that!

I drink my morning coffee black, but in the afternoon I like something a little sweet or might even make a homemade latte for a lite lunch. I was using milk or half-and-half, a little sugar or honey, and sometimes some cinnamon or vanilla, but it doesn’t blend very well in your coffee cup. Then, I had some unused cream and I added some cinnamon and vanilla and let it sit in the refrigerator. The next day, the flavors came through and everything melded. It was so good! It was rich and creamy and it had three ingredients: organic whipping cream, Ceylon cinnamon, and vanilla extract! I haven’t bought packaged creamer since that day…not even pumpkin spice!

When I wanted it a little sweeter, I started on the flavored sugars. First, vanilla sugar, then chai sugar…now I have several mason jars full of different flavored sugars that go into my afternoon coffee and my cookie recipes. I really like to mix them with softened butter and use it for sweet potatoes, biscuits, or muffins!

It’s Not Just About Money

Don’t get me wrong, it is less expensive to make homemade spice blends, and saving money is great. But it’s not really about the money.

It’s about knowing what goes into my body.

When I make my own taco seasoning, I know it contains: chili powder, cumin, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, pepper, and salt. That’s it. Nothing I can’t pronounce. Nothing I wouldn’t deliberately choose to eat.

When I pour homemade creamer into my coffee, I know it’s real cream with real cinnamon and real vanilla. Not vegetable oil pretending to be cream. Not “natural flavors” that could mean anything.

This matters to me.

I want to know. I want to choose. I want control.

And making my own spice blends and coffee creamers gives me that.

The Unexpected Benefits

When I started with homemade spice blends, I expected to save money and avoid weird ingredients. What I didn’t expect were all the other benefits.

My food tastes better. Genuinely, noticeably better. Fresh spices have more flavor. Real cream tastes like cream, not chemicals.

It’s fun. There’s something deeply satisfying about making things yourself and feeding your family and friends good ingredients.

I can customize everything. Don’t like spicy? Use less pepper. Love cinnamon? Add more cinnamon. You’re in charge.

They make excellent gifts. Homemade spice blends in pretty jars with handwritten labels? People love them. They’re personal, thoughtful, and useful.

How Easy Is It, Really?

I know: “This sounds great, but who has the time to make everything from scratch.”

Here’s the truth: These take less time than driving to the store to buy the pre-made version.

Homemade spice blends? Five minutes. Measure, mix, pour into a jar. Done.

Flavored sugars? Five minutes of active time, then they sit for a week getting more flavorful.

Coffee creamer? Literally shake ingredients in a jar for 30 seconds. Or take an extra 10 minutes and warm the ingredients slightly to melt the sweetener.

This isn’t the same as following a complicated recipe. This is measuring and mixing.

The skills required are minimal. The time investment is negligible. The payoff is enormous.

What If You Mess It Up?

Another thing people worry about: “What if I get the proportions wrong? What if it doesn’t taste good?”

The truth: You can’t really mess this up.

These aren’t precise baking recipes where the wrong ratio ruins everything. They’re spice blends. If you make your Italian seasoning and it’s a little heavy on the oregano, add more of the other ingredients and double the recipe, or leave it as is…it’s still going to taste like Italian seasoning…and change it up the next time.

If your cinnamon sugar has too much cinnamon (is that even possible?), add more sugar and adjust the next batch.

The worst-case scenario is that your first attempt isn’t perfect. So what? It’s still better than the store-bought version.

Honestly, most of these recipes are so straightforward that your first batch will probably be great.

The Guide That Changed Everything

When I first started making my own blends, I was winging it. Googling recipes, trying things, adjusting, making notes.

It worked, but it took time to find the right ratios, figure out what I liked, discover which combinations worked best.

So I created the resource I wish I’d had when I started.

It’s called “Homemade Pantry: Simple Recipes for DIY Spice Blends, Flavored Sugars & Coffee Creamers,” and it’s basically everything I’ve learned condensed into one comprehensive guide.

Questions?

“Do I need special equipment?” Nope! Just measuring spoons, bowls, and jars for storage. You probably already have everything you need.

“Where do I find the ingredients?” Regular grocery stores have everything. The guide includes a complete shopping list.

“How long do these last?” Spice blends last up to a year. Flavored sugars last indefinitely. Coffee creamers last 1-2 weeks in the refrigerator (because they’re real dairy with no preservatives).

“I’m not a good cook. Can I still do this?” These aren’t cooking recipes—they’re measuring and mixing. If you can measure a teaspoon of cinnamon, you can make these.

“Can I adjust the recipes?” Absolutely! That’s the whole point. Make them exactly how you like them.
